Why does it need to be certified?
In Germany, official translations must be done by a öffentlich bestellter und allgemein beeidigter Übersetzer, a translator officially sworn in by a German court. This produces a beglaubigte Übersetzung (certified translation) with a stamp, signature and registration number. Embassies, the Ausländerbehörde, the Berufsschule and the IHK will not accept a simple translation you did yourself or one without this certification. A certified translation by a German sworn translator is recognised nationwide.

When you need certified translations for your Ausbildung
Between finding a training place and starting your first day at the Berufsschule, several authorities may ask for translated documents. Each step has its own paperwork. Here are the four moments where certified translations usually come up.
1. Visa for vocational training (§16a)
For the §16a AufenthG visa, German embassies normally require proof of school education, sometimes previous training, and often a police clearance certificate, all with certified German translations.
2. Admission to the Berufsschule
The vocational school checks whether your prior schooling fits the training profession. It asks for translated school leaving certificates and often proof of your German level (B1 or B2).
3. Registration with IHK or HWK
The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or Crafts (HWK) must approve your Ausbildungsvertrag. For foreign applicants they often want your school education and earlier training in German translation.
4. Skilled worker permit after Ausbildung
After you finish your training, you can switch to a skilled worker permit under the Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz. Recognition of further qualifications may again require certified translations.

What we need to translate your certificates

- A clear scan or phone photo of your document, including every page, stamp and the back side if there is text on it.
- The target language (usually German for use in Germany).
- The purpose, for example "§16a visa" or "IHK registration", so we choose the right terminology.

Check whether your original certificate needs an Apostille or legalisation before you order the translation. If the apostille is added later, the translation may have to be redone to include it. Ask your embassy or Ausländerbehörde first, and we are happy to advise you.

Some authorities want to see the original at your appointment, but that requirement is between you and the authority, not the translator. If an authority needs a certified copy stamped by the translator, let us know so we can clarify what they expect.

Some embassies abroad may additionally keep their own local list of translators or have special rules, so always check the instructions of your specific embassy or authority and ask them if in doubt.

For many dual vocational trainings, the employer decides based on their own judgment, so formal recognition of school certificates is not always required. For some regulated professions or certain federal states, the Berufsschule or a Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle may ask for a formal evaluation, which usually needs certified translations.
