Why does it need to be certified?

In Germany, official translations must be done by a vereidigter Übersetzer, a translator officially sworn in by a German court. Only these translations carry the stamp, signature, and certification clause that German authorities require. A regular translation, no matter how accurate, will be rejected at the counter. The official at the Ausländerbehörde or Standesamt checks for that stamp first. No stamp, no acceptance.

Why Croatian nationals need certified translations in Germany

As an EU citizen, you have the right to live and work in Germany. But German authorities still require documented proof of your qualifications, civil status, and identity, all in German. Here are the most common situations:

Professional qualification recognition

The Anerkennungsstelle needs certified translations of your Croatian diploma, degree certificates, and transcripts before evaluating your qualifications. Engineers, IT specialists, and tradespeople all go through this process.

Healthcare professionals

Nurses, doctors, and caregivers face strict documentation requirements. Hospitals and recognition authorities for healthcare professions require certified translations of your nursing diploma, medical degree, and professional references.

  • Nursing or medical diploma
  • Employment certificates
  • Police clearance certificate

Naturalization and permanent residence

The Einbürgerungsbehörde requires certified translations of your Croatian civil status documents. This includes your birth certificate, marriage certificate, and often the Croatian Domovnica (certificate of citizenship).

Property purchase in Croatia or Germany

Buying a vacation home on the Dalmatian coast? Or property in Germany? Notaries, banks, and land registry offices require certified translations of land register extracts, purchase contracts, and identity documents.

What we need from you

Getting your certified translation is straightforward. Here's your checklist:

  • A clear scan or photo of your Croatian document (front and back if applicable)
  • All pages, stamps, margin notes, and signatures must be visible
  • The target language (German in most cases)
  • If you already have an Apostille, include it so we can translate that too

Good to know

You don't need to send us the original document. A clear photo taken with your smartphone is enough. The sworn translator notes in the certification that the translation was made from a copy. German authorities accept this.

Do you need an Apostille for your Croatian documents?

An Apostille is an international stamp that confirms your document is genuine. Croatia and Germany are both members of the Hague Apostille Convention, which simplifies document authentication between member countries.

Whether you need an Apostille depends entirely on what the German authority requests. The Standesamt for marriage or the Einbürgerungsbehörde may require it. The recognition authority for professional qualifications often does not. Always check with your specific authority first.

Important: The Apostille must be obtained in Croatia, on the original document, from the competent Croatian authority (typically the county court or Ministry of Justice). We recommend getting the Apostille before sending us your document, so we can translate both the certificate and the Apostille itself.

We don't provide Apostille services

Embassy Translations cannot obtain Apostilles for Croatian documents. You'll need to request this directly from the Croatian authorities or through a service provider in Croatia. However, once you have the Apostille, we translate it along with your document.

Questions about Croatian-German translations

How long does a certified Croatian-German translation take?

Delivery usually takes 3 to 6 working days; it may vary depending on the language and scope. Your personal delivery time is stated in your quote. The exact time depends on document length, complexity, and current workload. You'll receive the PDF by email first, followed by the original with stamp and signature by post.

Can I send a photo of my Croatian document, or do you need the original?

A clear photo or scan is perfectly sufficient. You don't need to send us the original. Make sure all stamps, signatures, and margin notes are clearly visible. The sworn translator notes in the certification that the translation was made from a copy, which German authorities accept.

Will my Croatian-German translation be accepted by all German authorities?

Yes. Our translations are made by translators sworn in by German courts (vereidigte Übersetzer). They include the official stamp, signature, and certification clause required by German authorities. This means acceptance at the Ausländerbehörde, Standesamt, Einbürgerungsbehörde, courts, universities, and employers throughout Germany.

When do I pay for my translation?

You pay after you receive your translation. The invoice comes with your completed translation, and you have 14 days to pay by bank transfer. No prepayment, no credit card needed. Your translation is in your hands before any payment is due.

Do I need to get an Apostille before having my Croatian diploma translated?

It depends on what the German authority requires. For professional recognition through the Anerkennung in Deutschland process, an Apostille is often not required. For naturalization or marriage, the Standesamt or Einbürgerungsbehörde may request one. Check with your specific authority first. If you need an Apostille, get it in Croatia before sending us your document.
