Kurmanji or Sorani? The difference matters
German authorities often want to know exactly which Kurdish variety it is. An imprecise note such as simply "Kurdish" quickly leads to follow-up questions. There are two main varieties:
- Kurmanji (Northern Kurdish): the most common Kurdish language, mainly in Turkey, Syria, Armenia and Lebanon. Usually written in the Latin alphabet.
- Sorani (Central Kurdish): the official language of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, also widespread in Iran. Usually written in a variant of the Arabic script, from right to left.
Good to know
You don't have to determine your dialect yourself. Just tell us which country and region your document comes from. Our translators can usually tell clearly from the script and the regional details whether it is Kurmanji or Sorani, and note the correct language in the certification.
